This post was inspired by a fellow blogger, thanks AstridOxford for the suggestion. Is your hair prone to dryness, frizz, breakage and dandruff? Why not consider prepooing? Are you prepooing the right way and with the right products?
Prepooing is the process of applying oil, conditioner or some other treatment to the hair before shampooing. It is a process you should include to your wash day regimen. Prepooing makes hair softer, frizz free, shiny etc.
What are the benefits?
- Moisture retention: If you have a hard time retaining moisture in your hair, prepooing can be just what your hair needs. Dry hair can be as a result of hair products containing drying ingredients such as sodium laryl sulfate which can be found in most shampoos.Since prepooing is done before shampooing it can reduce the natural oils stripped by shampoo.
- Detangling: Prepooing makes detangling a breeze, hair tangles become easier to remove and there is less shedding.
- Fights dandruff: Dandruff can be as a result of dry scalp, prepooing especially with oils will moisturize your scalp and also reduce dandruff flakes.
- Soft and shiny hair: Wants soft and shiny hair, prepooing will give you just that.
- Reduces growth: Frizz can be annoying and can make hair messy, you can get rid of it with prepooing.
- Less breakage: If you are experiencing breakage, prepooing during your wash days can really cut down on breakage.
- Promotes hair growth: Prepooing can also help with hair growth.
What to use for prepooing?
- Oils: Oils such as coconut oil, castor oil and olive works well as a prepoo treatment. You can either use a type of oil or mix the oils.
- Honey: Honey is a humectant and helps in retaining moisture.
- Shea butter: Melt some shea butter and use as a prepoo for extra moisturizing.
- Conditioner: Use your rinse out conditioner as prepootreatment.
How to prepoo?
- Put your hair into sections
- Apply prepooing treatment to your hair working from ends to root
- Cover your hair with shower cap and leave for about 30 minutes to 1 hour
- Rinse your hair with warm water, follow up with shampoo.

Aloe vera, apple cider vinegar can also help. Don’t worry, I will make a post soon on scalp psoriasis and home remedies. Just watch out for it.

Some shampoos actually worsen psoriasis especially those containing sodium laureth sulfate. OK, please do.

I love to prepoo with avocado! I’ve recently started using aloe vera gel though to hydrate my hair and lock it in with olive oil. I do it the night before I wash and as you’ve said detangling is a breeze and my hair LOVES it! Thank you for the wonderful post!

Hi I do part of the prepoo method, only the oils and it works well but am going to introduce the conditioner to it. I had dermatitis sehboric, I had visited a dermatologist and the prescription never worked but got it worst,a pharmacist prescribed a cream that they made and tablets,it work but I used to get flare ups,I changed my shampoo to the dailydefense brand that has less sulfate.I used oils before shampooing sometimes I sleep with the oils in my hair at nights and shampoo the next morning. I have no flare ups and dandruff is eliminating.
