Indigestion or dyspepsia is a common condition. Most of us have experienced it once or twice or more before. Indigestion is a discomfort or pain in the upper abdominal region and occurs before or after eating or drinking. It isn’t a disease but rather a group of symptoms.
Symptoms
- Belching
- Farting
- Upper abdominal pain
- Heartburn
- Burning sensation in the abdomen
- Feeling full after eating little food
- Abdominal bloating
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Causes and Risk factors
- Peptic ulcer: Peptic ulcer patients are susceptible to indigestion. Avoid anything that can trigger or worsen peptic ulcer.
- Alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol consumption can also put you at risk for indigestion. Reduce your alcohol intake or avoid it if possible.
- Smoking: Smoking can also cause indigestion, it is better to quit smoking to get better on time
- Eating spicy and fatty foods: Foods with lot of spices and fat can also predispose you to indigestion. You can prevent this by avoiding spicy and fatty foods
- Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen, aspirin and diclofenac. These medications can irritate the mucosa lining of the stomach predisposing you to indigestion. Avoid taking these medications to alleviate symptoms of dyspepsia.
- Late night food: Eating late at night will make you feel very full upon awakening in the morning because the food won’t have time to digest before you sleep. Ensure you eat 3 to 4 hours before bedtime.
- Eating too much: Overeating can also result in indigestion. Instead of eating a very big meal at once, opt for a small meal every four hours. This will give your body enough time for digestion.
- Chewing food with mouth wide open, talking while eating and eating too fast can lead to air swallowing which in turn leads to abdominal bloating and farting. Food should be eaten slowly, mouth should be slightly opened while chewing and avoid talking while eating.
- Emotional stress: Emotional stress such as depression, anxiety can also be the reason for your indigestion. Cut down on your stress and engage in activities that makes you happy.
- Dairy products: Milk and other dairy products can worsen indigestion, steer clear of dairy products.
Natural Remedies
- Ginger: Ginger aids digestion, treats nausea and vomiting making it a good remedy for digestion. Brew a ginger tea or munch on ginger for relief.

- Baking soda: This also a great kitchen staple that works wonder for hair, skin and health. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda in glass of water, this will neutralize the acidic content of the stomach.

I experience indigestion a lot. But not the severe one.
I go for a spoon of some antacid powder in water.
Next time, I’ll try Lemon & Honey in water.
Thanks for the info.
