You wants a smooth hairless skin after shaving but you got bumps instead? You are not alone.
Razor bumps also known as pseudofolliculitis barbae occur when you shave hair in an opposite direction to which it is growing. It can occur at the bikini line, armpit, face, legs etc.
It is characterized by itching, irritation, pain, swelling, burning sensation, redness, bleeding. Though it can subside by itself with time, there are home remedies that can relieve the symptoms.
Causes
- Shaving against the direction of hair growth: Shaving should be done in the direction of hair growth, if it is done otherwise, the hair curl up and pierce the skin forming bumps.
- Shaving too often: Razor bumps is more common in men than women because men tend to shave on a daily basis or too often unlike women. Allow the hair grow a little bit before shaving again.
- Using a blunt razor: While shaving you should use a quality sharp new razor, using a blunt razor require you shave a part over and over leading to bump formation. Also, used razor can harbour microorganisms causing infection.
- Dry hair: Shaving dry hair can easily irritate your skin causing bumps. Applying water and non drying soap before shaving will make the razor glide easily on the skin.
- Not moisturizing: You need to moisturize your skin after shaving, not doing so might lead to skin irritation.
- Having curly hair: Razor bumps is more common among the black race with curly hair than people with straight hair.
Natural remedies for razor or shave bumps
- Apple cider vinegar (ACV): Dab a cotton wool in equal part of water and ACV and apply on the affected part for relief.
- Cold compress: Applying cold compress on the razor bumps can reduce inflammation.
- Coconut oil: Rub some coconut oil on the bump area to relieve itching and burning sensation.
- Aloe vera: Aloe vera gel has antibacterial properties which means it can prevent the bumps from getting infected. It also gives a soothing effect on the bumps area.
- Salicylic acid (Aspirin): Aspirin is antiinflammatory, it can relieve the swelling, pain, redness caused by razor bumps.
- Baking soda: Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply on the affected part to relieve itching and also exfoliate.
- Shea butter: Shea butter is good for most skin conditions and razor bumps can’t be left out.
- Cucumber: Place slices of cucumber on the shaved area to soothe and reduce inflammation.
- Honey: Honey can also provide some relief when applied on the affected part.

Well.. I haven’t experienced these Razor Burns much.. I prefer trimming to shaving.
But I’ve experienced the irritation and the burning sensation… Thanks for the post… Aloe Vera, coconut oil, baking soda are some of the items that are there at home.

The irritation and burning sensation can be so annoying. It can even discourage one from shaving…… I don’t joke with those 3, Aloe vera…… Thanks for reading and sharing.

Definitely some great tips here and of course, certain methods will work better for some than others- everyone’s skin is different. I see a lot of skin irritation from shaving as an Army nurse (some worse than the title picture) and I can honestly say the best thing to do is prevent it in the first place
I feel like a lot of guys might just not know how to shave properly, committing those mistakes you identified in your post. Also, as you mentioned, some races are just at higher risk for razor burn/bumps. I’d recommend trimming for those individuals instead of using a razor. But, when using a razor to shave, I’ve found a few things over time that help prevent razor burn:
Washing your face prior to shaving with warm water and something gentle like Cetaphil may be helpful. Then, keeping the face damp, apply shaving cream and with a sharp blade, begin shaving with the grain only. Afterwards (the important part), wash your face again (Cetaphil works here too) and rinse off with cold water- this helps fight inflammation and closes the pores to prevent acne. Lastly, apply a light, non-greasy face moisturizer to help protect your face from drying out. Preferably one with a low SPF- if you’re putting lotion on your face it might as well help fight UV rays!

You are right about the tips you shared…. Prevention is always better than cure….Trimming will definitely help a lot of people susceptible to razor bumps….. I like cetaphill because it is very effective for people with sensitive skin.
I exfoliate before shaving and apply moisturizer after, that gives me good result.
I really appreciate your informative addition, thanks a lot. Also, it is nice to meet a fellow professional colleague, am a home health nurse.
